2nd Sunday Potluck & Film, "13th" by Ava Duvernay

  • Friends Meeting House 4312 Southeast Stark Street Portland, OR, 97215 United States (map)

Join us for a veg/vegan 2nd Sunday Potluck, followed by the film, "13th", by director Ava Duvernay.  Whether you're new to Living Earth or have been in this circle for a while, come! The food at our potlucks is great, folks are friendly, the conversation is thoughtful and lively, and it's a great chance to connect. Bring a dish or beverage to share and join us.

The 13th Amendment of the Constitution abolished slavery, but it includes a gaping and insidious loophole: wording that allows forced servitude as punishment for a crime. "13th" is a full-length, Oscar-nominated documentary by director Ava Duvernay (Selma), exploring the history of mass incarceration of black men in America.

Second Sunday Potlucks offer opportunities to share delicious food and thoughtful conversations that both challenge us and buoy our hearts with fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of belonging. Honestly considering the crisis facing our country, we'll find our humanity deepens as we become more able to hold the presence of contradictions, confusion, commonalities, and compassion.

Second Sundays will feature great food, good hearted folks, and meaningful conversations. After supper, we'll shift to our scheduled topic for larger discussions. On Second Sundays, we'll look at the challenges facing our country through a different lens, consider different aspects of that central problem, or discuss practices, actions, and possibilities that can avert damage and nurture the slow healing that allows justice, generosity, and beloved community to

Each month we'll have articles to discuss, or a film or video clip to view together, or a guest presenter to present new perspectives or fresh analysis.
