Community Potluck: Extremism, Grief, Courage, and Love

  • Friends Meeting House 4312 Southeast Stark Street Portland, OR, 97215 United States

Please bring an open heart and kind intention, along with a vegetarian or vegan potluck   dish to share.  We'll connect with old friends and meet new ones, and share delicious food and good conversation.

After supper, we'll clear away the dishes and shift our attention to a more focused look at our responses to the events of recent weeks.  This discussion will be facilitated by Living Earth's founder, Betsy Toll, bringing simple practices and contemplative tools into the mix of reflection and dialogue.

We'll consider means for untangling habitual reactivity, knee-jerk anger, and fear-based responses that complicate the hidden layers of grief and distress that are present in this time.  In the aftermath of the terrorist act on the MAX train, the community vigils, political pronouncements. and upheaval in the streets, we'll explore this terrain with an intention to hear and support others, to listen quietly without judgement and speak from our own hearts.

These times challenge all of us in myriad ways, so we'll check our inclinations to try to convince others or promote actions or beliefs––there are other settings and opportunities for those purposes.  Instead, the conversation here will be an opportunity to bring these thorny, complicated issues and our own open hearts into clearer view, holding each other in a kind, caring environment that allows honest exploration, subtle discovery, and the chance to be enriched by community.
